Dog Sports
I don't think there's a way to write properly about every dog sport in one article, without the article turning into a novel. So, I'm going to give a brief mention of several sports, and give links to organizations or companies involved with that sport so you can learn more on your own!
- Carting, drafting, scootering, bikejoring: I've always had a hard time finding information (especially up to date information) about these sports. They don't seem to be very popular in our area, but if your interested in learning any of them, I can help you! I've trained Gus to pull a cart and I have a 3-wheeled Sulky to practice with. Visit these links for supplies and info: BernerPaw.com, RomanReign.com, PetsFirst.com, DogHobbyist.com, Nordkyn Outfitters, Dogscooter.com, Dog Carting Wiki.
- Rally Obedience: Rally is FUN! I often hear people describe it as "boring" or Obedience "for beginners", but Rally is a lot more than you think. A lot of the skills you need for Rally are practical, useful skills and behaviors. It's also less restrictive and traditional than tradition Competition Obedience. Every course is different and has it's own difficulties. Check out these links for more information: AKC Rally, APDT Rally, RallyO Wiki, C-Wags Rally.
- Schutzhund: This sport involves three parts or phases (Tracking, Obedience, and Protection), and is typically dominated by traditional working breeds. However, clubs often welcome newcomers. Be sure to make friends in the sport and find a club or group you trust and feel comfortable with. Also remember that we can train anything with a clicker!! Visit these links for more information: What is Schutzhund?, Schutzhund Articles, Schutzhund Training (Clicker-based) Why Schutzhund?.
- Dock Jumping/Diving: I think this is relatively self-explanatory.Dog leaps off dock into water. At competitions distance is marked and recorded, and there are no breed restrictions. Links: Splashdogs.com, DockDogs.com, UltimateAirDogs.net, Dock Jumping Wiki.
- Earthdog: If you have a terrier, or another small rodent loving dog, check out Earthdog! Earthdog Wiki, American Working Terrier Association, AKC Earthdog, What is Earthdog?.
- Herding: Owners of herding breeds often wonder what their dog would do in the presence of sheep/ducks/cattle. If you take up herding with an experienced herding trainer, you can find out! You don't have to live on a farm to do this, either. Getting Started In Herding, AKC Herding, American Herding Breed Association, Stockdog Server.
- Flyball: Flyball is a team based relay race type of sport. If your dog has a lot of ball drive, a good recall, is dog friendly, and has a lot of energy, flyball might be something to try! Flyball Wiki, North American Flyball Association, FlyballDogs.com, United Flyball League International, Inc.
- Agility: Agility is quickly becoming VERY well known in the dog world. When we think of dog sports, this is usually what a lot of people think of. Agility involves a lot of precision, control, agility, and, eventually, speed. AKC Agility, United States Dog Agility Association, North American Dog Agility Council, Teacup Dogs Agility Association, An Introduction to Agility, Canine Performance Events, Inc.
- Tracking: All dogs have noses. They like sniffing. Tracking is a sport designed to test and show off our dogs' natural ability to find and follow trails. AKC Tracking, DogPlay.com, Dr. P's Dog Training.
