About Lulu
Like a lot of dog trainers, I became interested in pursuing a career with dogs because of one of my own dogs (see below for more information on that dog). After spending countless hours volunteering with several animal shelters and rescue groups, I decided to take this "dog thing" further. I enrolled in the Animal Behavior College, an 18 month long study program. I started getting to know the dog community in Richmond. I also began a nearly 2 year long apprenticeship under an experienced trainer and behavioral consultant here in Richmond, Katherine Smith CPDT CDBC (Shaggeypaws.net). Once I received my certification through the Animal Behavior College, I wasn't done.
Just like any career, good dog trainers are always learning. I joined the Association of Pet Dog Trainers to gain knowledge and learn from other trainers. I've attended seminars and workshops on both coasts with speakers such as Terry Ryan (Chicken Camp!), Kathy Sdao, Karen Pryor, Helix Fairweather, Steve White, Virginia Broitman, and many more. I've built up a large library of training books, old and new, along with DVDs of seminars I couldn't make it to. I try to regularly attend group classes around town because I think you learn something from everything you do and everyone you meet.
Gus
The dog that brought me to this career is Gus, also known as Gussy, Goosie, and Scroofie. She's getting on in years, and is mostly deaf, so it doesn't really matter what she's called, now. Before she was mature and dignified, like she is nowadays, she was a wild child. The only thing that could keep her level of energy down to a tolerable level was daily (and sometime several times a day) runs with the golf cart. She destroyed furniture, and was a jumpy, mouthy beast! Basically, she was a typical German Shepherd puppy. On top of that, when she grew up, she was severely reactive on leash and dog aggressive. She was big, loud, and sometimes scary. It was tough living with her, but Gus was just doing what she thought she was supposed to do, and she has taught me a lot about dealing with dogs like her. Now, she's a pleasure to be around, knows what I want from her, and knows how to communicate her needs with me.
Beyond dogs
I have experience working with several other species of animals, as well. I was known briefly on the internet for having a clicker (flashlight, actually) trained Betta fish. Rusty the clicker cat was the star before Gussy, and knew all the basics--recall, sit, down, shake, high five, targeting, and even some agility and concept training (she knew left and right). I've worked with aggressive biting horses and slow poke ponies, all using positive, kind, and effective effective methods. My old, grumpy pony, named Pony, learned to retrieve a cone in no time with just a few clicks and treats. Imagine the possibilities!
When I'm not surrounded by crazy dogs or playing with some sort of critter, I've certainly got plenty to do! I'm a hobby painter, and often do portraits for friends and family as gifts. Click here to see samples of my work.
